In cities with a Chinatown, weekend mornings bring dim sum carts or order sheets, and lines form early at the most popular spots in San Diego; walk-ins are standard and reservations are uncommon outside large banquet restaurants. Regional labels matter: Cantonese, Sichuan, Hunan, Shanghainese and Taiwanese kitchens cook very differently, so a restaurant's stated region is a better guide to the food than the word "Chinese" alone. Some smaller restaurants in California are BYOB with no corkage fee; call ahead to confirm. A tip of 15-20% is customary for table service but not expected at counter-order takeout. Spice level, MSG and allergen questions are normal to ask before ordering, and most kitchens are happy to leave an ingredient out or tone down the heat if you mention it when ordering rather than after the food arrives.
The business lists hours on 7 days of the week. On most of those days it is open 11:30 am–9 pm. As with most places, expect changes around holidays; the phone number below is the fastest way to confirm. The listed phone number is (619) 795-1700. Many businesses also reply to text messages on the same number if it is a cell phone. More information is available on its website, shanghaibunsd.com.

San Diego is in California, on the West Coast, where the climate ranges from foggy coast to hot inland valleys, wildfire season can affect air quality in late summer, and traffic is the main thing to plan around. US addresses list the street number and name, then the city, state abbreviation and ZIP code, and San Diego follows the same pattern; a suite or apartment number such as Ste 200 refers to a unit inside the building. The map link on this page shows the exact spot.

I went in for soup dumplings and it did not disappoint! I ordered the pork dumplings (soup dumplings) and the griddled pork & chives dumplings, they were incredibly hot and fresh.

Happy hour is from 3-6pm. We arrived before it ended and so we took advantage of their happy hour specials. There is a small parking lot behind the restaurant. We were greeted by a friendly and nice waiter and seated right away. There was only one other party in the restaurant on a Saturday evening. The food was hit or miss. The scallion pancakes were very oily, but the spicy wontons were good. The Char Siu Bao was ok but we liked the Har Gow shrimp dumplings. The pan fried pork and chives dumplings were a bit disappointing but we liked the duck bao tacos. The hot sake was a deal on the happy hour menu and we enjoyed that with our meal. Might try them again for dinner options next time we're in the area. My friend wanted dumplings that evening we were there.

Great location, very quaint. I love that part of Point Loma. Great variety of buns to choose from, some are more tastier then others, but definitely something for everyone. The back patio is now dog friendly. I highly recommend the scallion pancakes and get the large sampler for the variety. Great happy hour as well. There is a small parking lot in the back and street parking.

Singapore fried rice noodles had lots of chicken, shrimp, pork and eggs (10/10). The spicy wontons in chili sauce were not spicy, and found them mild but still enjoyable.

Easy vibe, not uptight or pretentious. Excellent quality, fresh, flavorful cuisine. Also an excellent value. I ordered three items, in honor of my mom & I (it’s Mother’s Day; she passed 12 years ago). Each item was bountiful & swiftly served (I have two more full meals left over). I even made it in time to catch the sunset! Greatly appreciative of a friend’s recommendation; I’ll definitely be back! Oh, & Sandy & team were awesome!!!
